Inflammation is a signal to the body to begin the healing process. It is a necessary part of skin rejuvenation. There are 5 main signs of inflammation: pain, heat, swelling. and loss of function. There are many stimuli that can cause inflammation as well, including burns, exposure to UV rays, stress, toxins, trauma, and alcohol.
Inflammation can be tamed with a diet of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients, including vitamin A (carrots, kale, spinach, pumpkin, cantaloupe); vitamin C (broccoli, brussels, sprouts, guava); vitamin E (olive oil, oats, tomatoes, carrots); bioflavonoids (berries, onions, tea, red wine, dark chocolate); polyphenols (tea, walnuts, pomegranates).
The biggest contributor to skin inflammation and aging is the sun. So protection is key. Any skin regimen needs to include an SPF 30 or higher!
